Guide to getting started with the Bicycology blog
If you have not visited our blog recently then I suggest you start off by having a quick look:
There are currently (as of Jan 16th 2010) six users associated with the Bicycology Blog, one Administrator (me) and five Authors (James, Dan, Patrick, Matt and Seb). If you are one of these five then you can skip the next section.
How to Create Your Account
Let me start by saying that WordPress is the blogging software but it has to be hosted on a server. You can set it up on any server but we are using it on the wordpress.com server which hosts many blogs. If you have a wordpress.com account then you will be able to use it with any wordpress.com blog. If you don't already have an account then you can create one here:
You will need to choose a username and password, give a valid email address and agree to the terms of service. By default it will also give you your own blog (username.wordpress.com). Even if you don't want your own blog it could be useful just for practice editing etc but if you really dont want one then click where it says "Just a username, please".
Once you have your accont then you will need to be added as an Author on any blogs you want to contribute to. As an Administrator of the Bicycology Blog I can add you as an Author, all I need to know is the email address associated with your wordpress.com account.
Posting a New Entry
Right, you have a wordpress.com account and you are listed as an Author on the Bicycology Blog, how do you post a new entry? Go to the blog:
If you are not logged in then you will see a link on the right under "The Meta" which says "Log in". Click there and give your username and password - you will be taken to the "Dashboard" for the blog. On the left you will see some links "Posts, Media, Links, Pages etc" - click on "Posts" and you will see a list of existing posts. Now look for where it says "Add New" and click there. Enter a title for your post in the first field and then start writing in the main box. For additional help there is a "Help" button near the top right of the window.
Once you have written something you can use buttons to "Save as Draft" if you want to carry on working on it later, "Preview" to see what it will look like, or "Publish" to actually put it on the blog. Don't worry, you can go back and edit or delete it even after it is published.
With your new found skill you could ask to join other wordpress.com blogs and write articles there too. For example:
