AktiviX II - Another System is Possible!

10-12th September 2004 — Sheffield, England

A weekend for environmental / animal rights / peace / social justice /anti-capitalist campaigners / activists and cultural creatives to get to know GNU/Linux, each other, and to discuss political strategies and actions around Information and Communication Technology

Free Software is an alternative to the products of other proprietary software corporations who do not share their code in a collaborative community or creative commons. Once a plaything for geeks, GNU/Linux is now an impressive, stable, secure, virus-free and versatile operating system.

AktiviX is a chance to try installing, running, and securing a GNU/Linux system, to share experiences and enthusiasm with other activists and hackers, and make plans for the future.

Whatever the level of ability, confidence or experience with computers all activists, grass-roots groups, social workers, and others who are interested in moving to Free software for a Free Culture are welcome.

There will also be a meeting about an AktiviX:CommunityServer project. The vision is to take control of informational flows through community building. People are encouraged to discuss participation in this collaborative effort with their local collectives and friends, -bring ideas and experiences!

Concrete Offers of Workshops (not yet timetabled)

  • introduction to Linux and Free Software - politics, ethics and practicalities. 30mins to 1hr - max
  • hardware workshop - take that computer apart and put it back together again - max {max - I've got lots and lots of hardware bits to bring along if it helps - suggest running it in parallel with install fest - make a machine then install on it?} Gareth

Friday

All that is planned on Friday is meeting at The Rutland pub from 7pm onwards it does food before 7 or so, it is near the train and coach station and here we will can sort out accomodation and have a beer :-)

The address is: 86 Brown Street, S1 2BS. And from the bus / train station walk up past road works and The Howard pub and the Showroom Bar on Paternoster Row, past the former NCPM (big stainless steel drum building, hosting Sheffield Live! in the ground floor of the first drum), Paternoster Row then turns into Brown Street, walk past Spearmint Rhinos and the Rutland is on the corner, see the Rutland website for a picture of the pub. It's only about 5mins from the station, ask locals if in doubt :-)

Access and Childcare

The space that is being considered has level access.

What are we going to do about childcare?

Perhaps people with any special needs should put their requirements on a wiki page or send an email to the organisers about it?

Venues

AktiviX II is going to be held at The Spectrum Centre, 105 Brunswick Road, Pitsmoor, Sheffield, S3 9LQ. (Previously known as The IRISH SOCIAL CLUB.)

  • Bus: 75, 76 ,97, 22 or 34 plus some more from town, bus stops are outside Crucible Theater or Castle Markets. Get off at the Gower Street stop - its actually on Burngreave Road - and then walk along Brunswick Road - Brunswick Road is on the same side as the bus stop, a few metres down the hill (ie heading towards town again), its 80p from the City Centre.

Accomodation

Floors in private places, squats and community centres? The "church place" that was used for Indymedia UK Network meeting was good - is it available?

Food

Ahhrg, nothing has been sorted, though on Saturday night there is a peace meal:

Stop the War fundraising Peace Meal

Locally cooked curry, background films, a little peace in our time. All you need to bring is conversation and a donation... raising funds for the anti-war march against Bush and Blair at the ESF.

Also, please bring along anything you can donate to the car boot sale on the Sunday.
