Guide to getting started with the Bicycology blog

If you have not visited our blog recently then I suggest you start off by having a quick look:

bicycology.wordpress.com

There are currently (as of Sep 20th 2011) six users associated with the Bicycology Blog, one Administrator (Ian) and five Authors (James, Dan, Patrick, Matt and Seb). If you are one of these five then you can skip the next section.

How to Create Your Account

Let me start by saying that WordPress is the blogging software but it has to be hosted on a server. You can set it up on any server but we are using it on the wordpress.com server which hosts many blogs. If you have a wordpress.com account then you will be able to use it with any wordpress.com blog. If you don't already have an account then you can create one here:

https://en.wordpress.com/signup

You will need to choose a username and password, give a valid email address and agree to the terms of service. By default it will also give you your own blog and even if you don't want your own blog it could be useful just for practice editing etc - if you really don't want one then click where it says "Sign up for just a username".

Once you have your account then you will need to be added as an Author on any blogs you want to contribute to. You will need to tell an Administrator of the blog the email address associated with your wordpress.com account and they will be able to add you.

Posting a New Entry

Right, you have a wordpress.com account and you are listed as an Author on the Bicycology Blog, how do you post a new entry?

Go to wordpress.com and log in if you are not already. You will then see a grey menu bar along the top of your browser window with tabs labelled "Me", "Blogs" etc. Hover over "Blogs" and you should see a popup menu with the names of the blogs you are associated with. Go to "Bicycology Blog" and choose "New Post". Enter a title for your post in the first field and then start writing in the main box. For additional help there is a "Help" button near the top right of the window.

Once you have written something you can use buttons to "Save Draft" if you want to carry on working on it later, "Preview" to see what it will look like, or "Publish" to actually put it on the blog. Don't worry, you can go back and edit or delete it even after it is published.

Other Blogs

With your new found skill you could ask to join other wordpress.com blogs and write articles there too. For example:

savevestas.wordpress.com therampart.wordpress.com londonbikegroup.wordpress.com
